Lung Repair After Quitting Smoking

By Matt Rushforth

Something that really helped me when quitting smoking was to begin the repairing process to my lungs early on. Just knowing that I was doing something positive to my body was a great source of comfort and focus and I believe was a major factor in me stopping smoking for good!

The method I decided to try was a simple, home lung detox which cost me around $30. The idea behind it is that it fast tracks the removal of chemicals, tar and toxins that have collected through your smoking habit. This in turn speeds up the the bodies natural repair of the lungs.

The lung detox was surprisingly easy to do but the effects were quite staggering so if you are thinking of doing it then prepare yourself for a shock. I expected to have some evidence that my body was getting rid all the gunge in my lungs but didn't expect it to happen so quickly and, I hasten to add in such volume. It was a real eye opener to see just how much tar I had in my lungs after 12 years of smoking. It's also a side effect to feel mildly sick but that passes after a day or two. What I wasn't aware of that it can take anything up to 15 years for the body to break down the tar and toxins naturally. I don't know about you but that is way too long for me to wait!

What it told me was that I was never going back to smoking again. There's no point going through a lung detox only to start smoking again. In fact though, the strange thing is the thought of smoking actually made me feel ill. If I even smelled another smokers smoke this also made my stomach turn a little. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of these ex smokers who preaches to smokers to stop. I fully understand the powerful addiction and enjoyment involved with smoking, but I would personally never go back now that my lungs are repaired and healthy.

When the lungs begin to repair it's not uncommon to develop a cough. This is actually a very good sign because it means that the lungs have started the repairing process. The first thing that happens is that small microscopic hairs within the lungs called cilia regain functionality. They have been paralyzed until this point by the effects of smoke but what they now start to do is clean out the lungs, which is their primary function. The other main damaged is done to the alveoli, which are small sacks that pass oxygen into the bloodstream. Lung detox brings the whole process on much quicker than it normally would happen, in fact in days, not weeks and so the lungs can begin to repair much sooner and you quickly feel much healthier. - 31816
